Brian Lutz

MFA in Illustration

Brian Lutz grew up in Harleysville, PA. Drawing was clearly one of his strengths. He attended Pennsylvania College of Technology and studied graphic design, drawing, painting and photography. After receiving an Associate of Applied Arts Degree in Advertising Art at in 2008, he began freelancing, taking design jobs and illustration commissions.

Lutz continued on to Tyler School of Art at Temple University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Studio Art in 2011. Post-graduation, Lutz continued to freelance, participate in gallery shows, and continuously draw and paint.

Lutz moved to Connecticut in 2017, for the proximity to New York City and to pursue editorial work. He subsequently enrolled in the MFA in Illustration Program at the University of Hartford. He looks forward to continuing his professional career in illustration upon completion of the MFA degree in 2020.

Artist Statement

Brian Lutz (b.1985) is an artist and illustrator currently living and working in Connecticut. Originally from Pennsylvania, Lutz studied design at Pennsylvania College of Technology and painting, drawing, and printmaking at Tyler School of Art at Temple University. He is currently pursuing an MFA in illustration at the University of Hartford.

Lutz enjoys story-telling and communication through images. Some of his influences are master painters, underground comix, children’s books, and polish poster art to name a few. Forever interested in learning, illustration was the perfect fit for this young artist. Illustration is problem solving and Lutz thrives on the challenge.

Currently his work is done traditionally, using a mixed media approach which includes the use of graphite, ink, watercolor, gouache, and colored pencil, but he also works digitally. Lutz takes pride in having the ability and sense to use any tool at his disposal to accomplish a job.

In the future, he hopes to complete his studies and continue to work within the illustration industry focusing on editorial, advertising, and publishing.

He is very grateful for anyone who enjoys his work and is infinitely excited and curious to see where his art will take him.
