Danielle Arlotta is a painter and illustrator living in Central Connecticut. She works primarily in traditional media including oil paint, charcoal, and graphite. Danielle’s work is informed by her relationships with her friends, family, and herself and deals with themes of intimacy, psychology, and body image.

I work figuratively in oil, charcoal, pastel, and graphite. In both my areas of study I am interested in the human figure and the relationships between others and myself.

My paintings are primarily portraits of the people I interact with and those I have a deep connection to. The images I craft of them are a testament to my existence within a network of people and my importance to others. A way of saying, to myself as much as the viewer, that I count and am valued. Recently my work has been more open, and I have been developing new ways of using color, line, and texture. Ways of applying the paint with less precision and more feeling, leaving behind a greater trace of my hand in the work.

My recent illustrative pieces have focused on themes of female body image and have drawn from my own experience with eating disorders. I work representationally in pencil, using my own references that I subtly manipulate to bring a sense of surrealism. I use the combination of soft, technical rendering and small unsettling details to emphasize the psychology in the pieces.
